HanziTales — Acceptable Use and Content Policy
Effective date: 22 September 2026 Last updated: 30 October 2026
This policy forms part of the Terms of Service. It applies to everything you submit to HanziTales — prompts, plot ideas, character names, titles, edits, the photos and text of a private text, ratings, reviews and feedback — and to the books generated from them, especially those you share with other users.
HanziTales is a language-learning app used by learners of all ages, including teenagers and, in school settings, children. Content must be suitable for that audience.
1. Content that is not allowed
Do not create, request, generate, upload or share material that:
Endangers children. Any sexual depiction of a minor, sexualised portrayal of a child character, grooming, or material that normalises abuse of children. This is prohibited absolutely, without exception for fiction, and we report it to the authorities.
Is sexually explicit. Pornographic or sexually graphic content. HanziTales is not a platform for adult material.
Is hateful or harassing. Attacks, slurs, dehumanisation or incitement to hatred against people or groups based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, caste, disability, disease, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or immigration status; bullying, threats, or targeting an identifiable private individual.
Promotes violence or extremism. Praise or support for terrorism, violent extremism or mass atrocities; recruitment or fundraising for such groups; instructions for weapons, explosives or other means of causing serious harm.
Facilitates serious harm. Instructions for drug synthesis, weapons manufacture, hacking, fraud, trafficking or other serious criminal activity.
Encourages self-harm. Promotion or instruction of suicide, self-injury or eating disorders.
Is illegal or infringing. Material that breaches the law that applies to you or to us, or that infringes someone's copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity or other rights — including pasting in substantial passages of a copyrighted book to have them rewritten or translated into a book. Reading a text you have a right to read as a private text, for your own study, is allowed under the conditions below.
Is deceptive. Impersonating a real person or organisation, fabricated statements presented as fact about real people or events, disinformation about health, elections or emergencies, or content designed to defraud.
Exposes private information. Personal information about another person — addresses, phone numbers, identity numbers, financial details — without their consent.
Is spam or abuse of the Service. Bulk or automated generation, advertising, link spam, or generation unrelated to language learning.
Mature themes in fiction
Stories may contain conflict, danger, crime, illness, grief, historical atrocity and moral complexity — the material of real literature. The line is between depicting a difficult subject in a way a general reader could encounter in a published novel, and gratuitous, instructional or endorsing treatment of it. Content generated for a School's account is held to a stricter, classroom-appropriate standard.
Private texts
A private text is a Chinese text you photograph or paste — a page of a book you own, a menu, a sign, a letter — so that you alone can read it in HanziTales with pinyin, translation and audio. It is never shared with other users or published by us. You may use it for text you have a lawful right to read, for your own language study. Do not use private texts to copy a whole book or a large part of one, or to make copies for other people. The rest of section 1 applies to what you submit as a private text too.
2. Using the Service itself
Do not:
- circumvent, disable or interfere with credit charging, plan limits, chapter gates, trial eligibility or any other technical restriction, including by running multiple accounts to multiply free allowances;
- automate, script or otherwise generate at a scale beyond ordinary personal use;
- scrape, crawl, bulk-download or systematically extract content, vocabulary data or audio from the Service;
- use the Service, its content or its output to train, fine-tune, evaluate or benchmark a machine-learning model, or to assemble a competing dataset or product;
- republish, distribute or sell books generated in the Service, contrary to section 7 of the Terms of Service;
- probe, scan or test the security of the Service, or access data that is not yours, other than through our security reporting process (section 6);
- reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the app, except to the extent that right cannot lawfully be excluded;
- resell, rent or sublicense access to the Service, or share an account with people it was not sold to;
- misuse support, feedback or reporting channels, including submitting knowingly false reports;
- use the Service in a country subject to comprehensive US trade sanctions, or if you are on a US restricted-party list.
3. How we enforce this
We use a combination of automated safety filtering by our AI providers and our own checks, and human review of reported content. Automated filtering happens before generation and can cause a generation request to be refused; where a request is refused for safety reasons, credits charged for it are returned.
Depending on how serious and how repeated a breach is, we may:
- refuse or remove the content;
- warn you;
- remove a book from the shared library, or unshare it;
- limit features on your account;
- suspend the account;
- terminate the account, with refunds as described in section 13 of the Terms of Service;
- report the matter to law enforcement, which we do without hesitation for child sexual abuse material or credible threats to life.
Except where a breach is serious, unlawful or risks harm, we will tell you what happened and give you a chance to put it right.
Appeals. If you think we got it wrong, reply to our notice or write to support@hanzitales.com with the subject "Content appeal". A person, not an automated system, will review it, and we aim to answer within 14 days.
4. Reporting content
If you encounter a shared book that breaches this policy, open the book's page and choose Report this book from its menu. You can also email support@hanzitales.com with the subject "Report content", naming the book and, if possible, the chapter; use email for a title or user name, too.
We review reports of illegal content and child endangerment with priority, and other reports within a few business days.
We will tell the reporter the outcome where we can, and we will tell the author when we remove their content and why, unless telling them would be unlawful or unsafe.
5. Illegal content and legal orders
To report illegal content or to serve a legal notice, email legal@hanzitales.com with the subject "Legal notice". Copyright complaints follow the separate process in the Copyright and DMCA Policy.
6. Reporting a security problem
If you find a vulnerability, email support@hanzitales.com with the subject "Security". Please give us a reasonable chance to fix it before disclosing it, do not access or modify other users' data, do not degrade the Service, and do not extract more data than needed to demonstrate the issue. We will not pursue legal action against researchers who follow this.
7. Changes
We may update this policy as the Service and the law evolve; material changes are notified as described in section 13 of the Terms of Service.
